A historical marker discussing Buchanan, Minnesota.

My first view of Split Rock Lighthouse on the coast of Lake Superior.

Looking up the light tower on a tour of the facility.

Docents dressed in period clothing gave tours.  This gentleman was showing the light turning mechanism.

The lighthouse.

The head light keeper's home.

This building was previously used to store the units generating air for the fog horns.

A bedroom in the light keeper home.

Members of Amateur Radio Station K0ARF, "Keeping Amateur Radio Fun."  IN the picture are Mike, Ben, Lee, Scott, and Maddie.  It was great to meet you, and thanks for letting me try to generate some CW contacts!

Another view of the station, set up to participate in a Ham Radio contest, the International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend. sponsored by the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society.

Further along the road, I stopped at the St. Francis Xavier Church.

The back of the church.

The interior, with the bell rope visible to the left.

Roxie was available to provide information about the church.  Her daughter Mary was helping today.

The church entrance.

One last picture of the church.

My next stop, Grand Portage National Monument, was created to preserve and commemorate an eighteenth century fur trading route.  This panel describes the next picture.

A wigwam, part of the recreated village.

This gentleman was building a canoe by hand.  A canoe he previously built can be viewed here.

Some of the buildings used by the North West Company, who provided for the trappers needs with lodging, trading, and food.

A sign describing "The Grand Portage."

There were incredible views along the road.  This picture is looking northeast towards Lake Superior.

This is looking southeast from the overlook.
